Foreword
We run RustJobs.dev and help companies hire Rust engineers, so we watch this market every day. This report shares what we see: who is hiring, what they pay, and how long their job ads stay open.
Three things stand out this quarter. Hiring is overwhelmingly senior: about four in five Rust job ads that state a level want a senior or staff engineer. Pay is high, with a typical advertised base salary of $205,000 for senior roles in the US. And Rust job ads stay advertised longer than job ads in general.
Use these numbers to benchmark your next Rust hire. If you'd like help finding the right engineers, talk to us.
Backend engineer with more than 10 years of experience, from start-ups to tech giants like Amazon.
Software engineer with years of experience at startups and in recruiting for niche software engineering roles.
How many Rust jobs are advertised?
On 14 September 2026 we counted 754 open job ads that require Rust, at 311 companies. In total, 2,911 job ads mention Rust.
We only count job ads where Rust is genuinely needed: the ad asks for Rust experience, or the work itself is written in Rust. Plenty of ads mention Rust as one option among several, or as a nice-to-have. Counting those too would have inflated the market almost fourfold, from 754 jobs to 2,911.
Which industries are hiring Rust engineers?
Defense, aerospace & space companies post the most Rust jobs (169, or 22.4%). Crypto & web3 has the most companies hiring (60).
Defense, aerospace and space leads, with nearly one in four Rust job ads (169). Crypto and web3 has the most companies hiring (60), averaging fewer than two jobs each. AI and machine learning is second by number of jobs (120). Leave out defense and crypto, and about 65% of Rust jobs remain.
The smaller line shows how many companies are in each industry and how many jobs each has on average.

What this means
Go job ads outnumber Rust ads 3.4 to 1 on the same careers pages.
Another 2,156 job ads list Rust as an option or a nice-to-have, so Rust experience is useful well beyond the 754 jobs that require it.
What We'll Watch Next
This is our first edition. Here's what we'll be tracking in the next one.
Will the share of Rust job ads asking for senior or staff engineers (80.9% now) hold?
Together they post 38.3% of Rust job ads, so their hiring plans move the whole market.
Only 27 of 157 European Rust job ads show a salary. New EU pay-transparency rules may change that.
How did we build this report?
Every day we collect job ads from 1,753 company careers pages and sort every ad that mentions Rust. We count only the ads where Rust is genuinely needed, and use CVs from our Talent Network for the seniority comparison.
Where the data comes from
We go straight to the source: company careers pages on platforms such as Workday, Greenhouse, Ashby and Lever. We don't use job aggregators or our own job board. We've tracked them every day since 10 June 2026. For the seniority comparison, we also use CVs from our Talent Network.
What counts as a Rust job
Lots of job ads mention Rust without needing it. We sort every ad that mentions Rust into three groups, and only count the first:
Write high-performance, production-quality code in C/C++ and Rust
Staff Engineer, Firmware. The work itself is in Rust.
Strong in at least one of: Go, Rust, C/C++
Platform Engineer. You could get this job without Rust.
Familiarity with system programming languages including C++ and Rust is a plus
Machine Learning Engineer. Rust is a nice-to-have.
That's why this report counts 754 Rust jobs rather than 2,911. A "required" ad either asks for Rust experience or describes work written in Rust.
What this report doesn't cover
No job-market study sees everything. We track company careers pages we can read directly, so companies that hire only through LinkedIn, referrals or careers sites that block automated access aren't included. That leaves out some of the largest Rust employers, including Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Apple and Meta.
We also follow 2,940 more companies with Rust work that had no Rust job ad we could count this time: 1,770 have no careers page we can read, and 1,170 had no current Rust job ad. Treat 754 as a count of Rust jobs on public careers pages, not every Rust job in the world.
Technical notes: definitions, accuracy and limits
Collection and counting
We polled 1,753 job boards on ten applicant tracking systems (Workday, Greenhouse, SmartRecruiters, Ashby, Lever, Workable, Teamtailor, Recruitee, Rippling and Notion) once a day between mid-June and the snapshot; 0.81% of polls failed. A job ad counts if it was open at 09:00 UTC on 14 September 2026 according to its history of opening and closing, and had been seen on its board within the previous 21 days. Ads are counted per job-board posting, not de-duplicated across boards; 1 of the 754 Rust ads repeats the exact wording of another at the same company. A job ad is not the same as a hire: one ad can cover several roles, and several ads can cover one. The 311 companies include 4 consultancies with 6 ads between them. Since we started tracking on 10 June 2026, 86 companies that had Rust job ads no longer have any open. Some of the largest Rust employers, such as Amazon and Google, don't publish jobs on careers pages we can read, so they aren't included.
How accurate the sorting is
Sorting is automated. Of the 2,911 ads that mention Rust, 754 were sorted as required, 1,605 as one option among several, 551 as a nice-to-have, and 1 could not be sorted. We check the sorting against job ads labelled by hand: on 186 hand-labelled ads that mention Rust, our reviewer and the automated sorting agreed on whether Rust was required in 134 (72.0%). The labels come from a single reviewer on a sample that was not drawn at random, so treat this as a guide to how uncertain the sorting is, not an exact error rate.
warning: this job description mentions Rust but does not require it --> senior-backend-engineer, one of 1,605 like it:14 | 14 | Strong experience in Go, Rust or C++ | ^^^^ one acceptable option among three | = note: 1,605 of the 2,911 open job descriptions that mention Rust look like this = note: a further 551 mention it only in passing = note: 1 carries no classification and is counted nowhere
Industries and locations
Industries are assigned to companies, so every job ad at a defense company counts as defense, whatever the role. Locations come from each ad; "Rest of Europe" and "Rest of world" cover places not assigned to a named market, and some location text that could not be matched falls into "Rest of world". Of 644 ads that state a working setup, defense has 54 of 169 ads with no setup stated, against 56 of 585 elsewhere, so the defense remote figure is less certain. Of all 754 ads, 39 list no location and 110 state no working setup. Ads listing several regions count in each region, so location shares add up to more than 100%. Remote roles can still be limited to certain countries or time zones.
Most Rust-focused companies
The share counts all of a company's open jobs, including sales and operations, so it understates Rust's weight at companies with large non-engineering teams. These shares rest on a handful of job ads per company, so a single new opening can change the ranking.
Salaries
Salaries are advertised base pay only: not final offers, and excluding bonus and equity. Each job ad contributes the middle of its advertised range, and the "typical" salary is the median of those. Figure 5 covers 224 of the 336 US ads with a range, the ones assigned a seniority level; the state figures cover 328. Location counts in Figure 3 use every listed location (457 US ads, including multi-region ads), while salary coverage uses each ad's single country (443 US ads). For Europe, 27 of 157 ads show a range; 8 were set aside as not plausible annual salaries, and the rest are shown in their original currency without conversion. Junior (7 ads) and Mid (21 ads) figures rest on few job ads.
Seniority
281 of 754 Rust job ads (37.3%) don't state a level and are left out of seniority shares. Talent Network levels are extracted automatically from the roles on members' CVs, not self-reported, and members may not be looking for work. Our Talent Network isn't the whole job market, so Figure 7 compares two mixes of levels, not the number of engineers available.
How long job ads stay advertised
The comparison follows every job ad we first saw between 1 July–16 July 2026, on the same careers pages, and records whether it was still advertised 30 and 45 days later. An ad coming down doesn't prove the role was filled. The ± figures below show how much each 45-day number could move by chance alone, given how many ads are in each group; they don't account for several ads coming from one company, and we don't test the gaps between groups. The Go and Scala groups are smaller than the others, so treat the language comparison as a guide.
| Job ads | Count | At 30 days | At 45 days | Margin at 45 days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rust | 206 | 79.6% | 67.5% | ±6.4 pts |
| Go | 610 | 71.8% | 62.3% | ±3.8 pts |
| Scala | 113 | 61.1% | 53.1% | ±9.2 pts |
| All other job ads | 21,714 | 69.5% | 57.7% | ±0.7 pts |

Comparing editions
This first edition is a snapshot taken on 14 September 2026, before the end of the quarter. The set of careers pages we can read changes over time, so future changes may reflect coverage as well as the market, even with unchanged definitions (market-report-v1).
