SUMMARY: The position contributes across multiple projects involving aviation communications, sensing, and network services. The role emphasizes functional-level design ownership, implementation of math- and physics-based algorithms, and on-going participation in operating the systems being built. The position will require end-to-end knowledge of AURA's Deterministic Distributed Radar airspace awareness solution. This includes overall understanding of the architecture, functional components, integration requirements, security requirements, OSS, databases, and external service integrations, such as live ADS-B feeds, digital twins for continuous improvement, machine learning or AI.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: • Design, implement, and maintain production-grade Rust software components and services supporting AURA’s aviation network, meeting defined reliability, performance and security requirements. • Translate system and product requirements into well-scoped technical designs for features and subsystems • Develop math-intensive, algorithmic, and physics-based software, translating theoretical models into efficient and reliable implementations • Own functionality through the full lifecycle, including design, implementation, deployment, and operational support • Implement secure software aligned with NIST SP 800-53 / 800-171 and CMMC requirements • Support aviation software processes aligned with DO-278A concepts • Support secure software development practices aligned with NIST/CMMC-style controls and applicable aviation standards • Build software with a focus on commercial readiness, including reliability, fault handling, observability, and maintainability • Implement logging, metrics, health checks, and diagnostics to support monitoring and troubleshooting in production environments • Collaborate with systems engineering, RF engineering, network engineering, and operations teams to ensure solutions meet performance and regulatory requirements • Participate in code reviews, design reviews, test scenario development and execution and technical discussions to improve system quality • Document designs, assumptions, limitations, and operational behavior to support traceability and audits
SKILLS REQUIRED: • Proficiency in Rust, including async runtimes, ownership, borrowing, lifetimes, and asynchronous programming • Experience developing and operating production software in Linux-based environments • Understanding of algorithmic and numerical software development, including performance and correctness considerations • Understanding of advanced principles of cloud infrastructure providers (Azure, AWS) • Ability to work in AWS Gov Cloud, or other secure environments (US Citizenship required) • Expertise with scripting and automation languages (Python, Bash, and similar) • Understanding of observability concepts such as logging, metrics, and monitoring • Expertise with version control systems and collaborative development workflows (GitHub) • Expertise with JIRA, standard agile sprint planning, etc. • Understanding of Software Defined Radios and how they are used, configured, and tested • Working knowledge of RF Network and Spectrum Analyzers • Critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary engineering environment • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presenting technical topics to technical and non-technical audiences
QUALIFICATIONS: • BS degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent technical experience • 2–5 years of professional software engineering experience • Professional experience using Rust, and similar programming languages • Experience operating or supporting software in production environments • Related experience or interest in aviation, aerospace, or other regulated industries
